Honesty & Ethics: Nurses are No. 1!

It’s safe to say that some professions inspire more respect and trust from the masses than others.

But there’s one profession that is the hands-down winner in the contest for people’s trust. It is definitely not Congress. Members of Congress ranked at the bottom of this year’s Gallup poll on the most ethical and trustworthy professions, coming in at 58% of the U.S. public saying they have low or very low levels of honesty and ethical standards. Yikes!

So, who does the crown of trustworthiness go to? For the 17th year in a row, the nursing profession has been the runaway winner of the public’s trust. In fact, the most recent poll showed that the percentage of Americans in the survey giving nurses the nod for ethics and trustworthiness, is even higher than the year before at a whopping 84%!

And why not? After all, there are few professions that literally revolve entirely around helping others. But not just helping – helping during some of the worst circumstances you might experience in your lifetime. And then there’s the sleep deprivation, long shifts, and cranky patients. Despite those difficult circumstances, the care happens and a patient’s experience is made a little more bearable because a nurse made it happen.

Medical doctors, pharmacists and high school teachers rounded out the top three in this year’s poll, but nurses locked in the #1 spot by double digits.

The world is filled with heroes. The ones that get noticed and applauded for their efforts, and the ones that do the hard stuff even when no one is looking – like nurses. A career in nursing may not be the most glamorous, but it’s a safe bet that it is one of the most rewarding.
