Becoming a Beauty Entrepreneur
It’s safe to say becoming an entrepreneur of any kind comes with a variety of challenges. There’s no exception for aspiring beauty entrepreneurs. If you’re among those looking to break into the multi-billion-dollar beauty industry, it can be tough to know exactly where to start. You may even be wondering what exactly defines a beauty entrepreneur. After all, the industry is massive. Fortunately, we’ve got some suggestions to get you started. But first – let’s explore what it actually means to be a beauty entrepreneur.
What is a Beauty Entrepreneur?
Strictly speaking (and according to dictionary.com), an entrepreneur is – a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. Apply that definition to the beauty industry, and a beauty entrepreneur might be a salon owner, a cosmetic company executive or a beauty influencer on social media. But the considerable initiative part is what sets someone apart from the herd as an entrepreneur. You know, that drive and willingness to put in the hard work to make your dream a reality. Which brings us to what comes next.
Where Do I Start?
Getting started on your quest to become a beauty entrepreneur starts with – actually just getting started. It may sound simplistic but the first thing you have to do – is know what you want to do in beauty. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck there once you’ve achieved your goal. True entrepreneurs in any industry are adaptable by necessity. The point is to identify what you’re trying to achieve in the present and build your plan around it.
What Problem am I Solving?
But more specifically, what are you offering to the consumer? The best products and the most successful entrepreneurs solve a problem for their audience / customer. Problem solving is at the core of every great innovation in history! So, start by dialing in to what your particular niche is, or what you want it to be. Because depending on what your goal is, i.e., successful salon owner, renowned stylist or Instagram’s next best beauty influencer, your path to getting there will be slightly different.
Study the Competition
Once you’ve determined what it is you want to bring to market, the next best step is to figure out what your competitors are up to. Especially, the more successful ones. You’ve heard the expression – inventing a better mouse trap? When it comes to innovation and entrepreneurship, it’s not always about inventing the next big thing (although that would be awesome too), often it’s about finding a way to do it better. What better way to learn about the industry you’re trying to conquer than by studying the ones who already have? That’s the time to ask – what problem is still not being solved, or at least, solved well enough for your target audience or customers. That’s the essence of what a disrupter in an industry is. Translation – the ones who challenge the status quo and offer something just a little or a lot better – are going to be ahead of the curve.
Surround Yourself with Support
This sounds a little broad but no matter what your entrepreneurial goals in beauty are, it’s always going to be easier with the right support system. If that means getting support from family or friends while you get an education in your niche, teaming up with a partner to open a salon or launch a beauty product – becoming a beauty entrepreneur doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. In fact, sometimes the right partner in a venture can make all the difference in the world.
Stay on Top of Beauty Trends
Even when you’ve “made it” to the finish line as a beauty entrepreneur, tell yourself – there really is no such thing. Why? Because the beauty industry is constantly evolving. So, staying on top of your game means staying on top of the trends and above all else – adapting! What’s better than being successful as a beauty entrepreneur? Doing it all over again.
