Dr. Kal Ali

Director of Education

Dr. Kal Ali holds an M.D. degree with undergraduate classes in Cell and Molecular Biology. He began teaching at the undergraduate level at California State University in the health science and medical technology departments before obtaining his degree in medicine from the American University of the Caribbean in association with London Teaching Hospital. He worked in the medical field for approximately 13 years in Trauma and Orthopedics. He then went on to work in the Clinical Research field with various pharmaceutical and drug manufacturers which consisted of drug development, clinical trials, monitoring and compliance. His experiences in all these fields allowed him the opportunity to teach at various institutions in the Allied Health fields, which included the Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technology and Health Science programs. He became a Medical Programs Director and assisted in the development of the Pharmacy Technology program and then went on to become Director of Education and has been in this position for several years. He has been a subject specialist for ACICS, a book reviewer for McGraw Hill, a test administrator for PCAT examinations, and a volunteer for medical relief programs under the auspices of the World Health Organization.

Program Director of Massage

Mr. Brooks, a native of Daytona Beach, Florida, has been the Program Director, an Instructor of Therapeutic Massage and Anatomy and Physiology for the past eight years at Daytona College. His academic background is a rather eclectic curriculum of study: Music Performance, Art, Human Anatomy, Human Movement Potential, Physical Education, Kinesiology, and Therapeutic Massage. As a working Licensed Massage Therapist in Florida since 2005, Mr. Brooks manages a private practice in addition to his teaching responsibilities. His passions, apart from Teaching and Massage Therapy, are weight lifting, reading anything, meditation, and enjoying his loving family.

Jane Sharpe

Massage Instructor

Jane Sharpe began her career as a massage therapist in California in 1994 where she was the owner if a busy massage therapist in California in 1994 where she was the owner of a busy massage office, while still working in the Electronics field in Silicon Valley. From there she went to Colorado to further her massage career, worked in Dr.’s offices and Hospice as well as opening a spa. Loving the outdoors, she was still able to find the time for hiking and working with rescued horses. Jane has been a nationally recognized massage instructor and CE provider with NCBTMB for 6 years utilizing various modalities, but holds certifications in Swedish, Neuromuscular Therapy and Trigger points, Sports, Deep Tissue and Reflexology. Having worked for years with an Acupuncturist and Physical Therapist, Jane has concluded that the addition of Traditional Eastern methodology, to any massage modality can enhance its effectiveness. In addition to Massage Instruction, Jane also works in Student Services assisting Medical Assistants with Internships locally throughout the country. One of her favorite things remains to be assisting massage students in clinical, watching their skill sets improve and their minds expand.

 

 

Allied Health Faculty

CPC

I am a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through AAPC since September 2005. I have been working in the medical field since 2000 with coding Outpatient professional/technical services since 2003. My billing and coding experience includes the fields of Pathology, Laboratory, Radiology, Surgery (OB/GYN, Gastro), ED, Critical Care, and Consults. I have supervised in the fields of Pathology and Radiology. I have also served as President of my local AAPC Daytona Beach Chapter throughout 2014.

My role here at Daytona College is to prepare students for an entry-level position as a medical biller/coder or medical administrative assistant as they begin their career in the Healthcare field. This training will allow them to work in the many types of healthcare settings such as clinics, medical offices, hospitals and health insurance companies.

Instructor

Gerry Pape joined the faculty at Daytona College in the spring of 2011. Her career in the medical field spans 25 years and 3 states (Illinois, Wisconsin, & Florida). She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Alverno College in Milwaukee Wisconsin and she is a Certified Professional Coder through the AAPC. As a previous billing manager for hospitals, medium to large physician groups, and billing services her experience brings diversity to our program. Some of the specialties she is talented in include: billing for emergency medicine, family practice, occupational medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, AODA, Psychiatric, Radiology, Cardiology, and Internal Medicine. Her passion for this field is alive in our classrooms along with her involvement in our local AAPC chapter as the current Chapter Vice President.

 

Business Program Faculty

Ona Bonsell joined the Daytona College faculty in 2014. She comes with nearly 20 years of Information Systems experience in various roles from programming, quality assurance, project management as well as business analysis and data analysis. Additionally, Ona has several years of teaching experience in many software applications. Ona received a Masters in Management Information Systems from Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL, and a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems from Florida A&M University, in Tallahassee, FL. She has also received a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from Seminole State College/University of Central FL. Ona remains active in her local community as a mentor to local high school students in technology and has received local and national awards as Central Florida Black Achiever and National Engineer of the Year “Modern Thought Leader”. She embraces opportunities to share her knowledge with others. She enjoys being a catalyst in the growing technology community by sharing her knowledge with others. Her goal is to allow students to grow and gain confidence in their use of computers and their knowledge of technology. Ona enjoys spending time outdoors canoeing, fishing and “theme-park-hopping”. She also enjoys Sci-Fi movies, gardening, painting (watercolor, oil and acrylic) and sculpting.
